Friday Memo |  February 7, 2025

Dear TBHS Community,

Happy Friday after a snow day! This week in our faculty meeting, we worked in groups to brainstorm ideas for improving daily student attendance in classes. While some focused on the impact of tardies others focused on ways to encourage better attendance. Most agreed that the issue seems to get worse with our seniors. As we head towards Senior Season, please join me in reminding seniors that we do not have an open campus. Senior privileges are only for when a free period is first or last period of the day.

While the High School has been thinking about all things attendance, the Middle School has been discussing technology and the impact on learning. Dan’s newsletter this week got me thinking. In High School, all students have mac books and nearly all have phones. While I rarely see a phone in class, I almost always see laptops. Nearly all the time they are being used appropriately for learning, but I can’t help but wonder about the lasting effects of computer use during the pandemic and our heavy reliance on them still. I also worry about their ability to quickly toggle between tabs and how distracting that might be (as I have about 100 tabs open on my laptop–ahem). Also, as a parent older teens…I know it’s nearly impossible to escape the screen these days. Soon I’ll be attending a webinar on the topic by Jonathan Haidt author of The Anxious Generation. I’ll let you know if I learn all the answers.

Next week is the week before February Vacation. Julie and I have a zoom meeting to prepare for the next phase of our NEASC accreditation. It's also Spirit Week! Monday kicks it off with Blue & White/Bromfield gear!

Of course, these are only a snapshot of the range of academic, social, and emotional learning happening at TBS!

Please let us know if you have any questions! Below you will find upcoming dates and school/community events.

Best,

Kim

School Announcements

Science Fair:

Greetings from the Bromfield Science Department

Consider being a judge at the 2025 Science Fair!  The annual Bromfield Science Fair will take place in person at The Bromfield School, 14 Massachusetts Avenue in Harvard, MA on Friday, March 7th at 3:30 pm. What could be more fun than interacting with some enthusiastic and energetic young scientists on a topic they’re passionate about?

Prior experience is not required – training and guidance will be provided.  A background in science is helpful but not essential – more important is a love of learning and an interest in interacting with young scientists.  Judging at the science fair requires about 1½ to 2 hours.  We ask judges to arrive at 3:00 pm, so we can start with a brief training session.  Judging will finish around 5:45 pm, depending upon the number of projects that are in your panel.

If you are interested and available to judge at this year’s science fair,  please complete this form (link:  https://forms.gle/2FWSTr1TPXXrRzS29) with your contact information as well as the subjects and grade levels you prefer to judge. We will determine judging assignments based on the number and types of projects and do our best to match your preferences. Please contact Kristen Vanderveen, the Bromfield science department leader, with any questions or changes to your availability.

We look forward to hearing from you!

The Review:

The Review is excited to announce that we've opened submissions for this year’s literary magazine!

If you have any sort of written essays, poetry, short stories, physical or digital art, or photographs that you’d like to share, then we encourage you to submit them to us! There’s no sort of criteria on what to send in-- if you like what you’ve created, then we suggest that you share it with others by submitting it to The Review Google Classroom (Classroom code 6jkbr5i) by FEBRUARY 28th 11:59 PM. All of the submissions will be printed in a physical magazine that will be available schoolwide free of charge. You can either submit material anonymously or choose to be credited.
